A major scandal erupted at the 2026 European Wrestling Championships in Tirana. In the semifinal of the 130 kg weight category, 24-year-old Belarusian Pavel Hlinchuk faced legendary Turkish heavyweight Rıza Kayaalp.
Kayaalp, an experienced athlete and 11-time European champion as well as 5-time world champion, started the bout confidently and took a 4–0 lead. However, midway through the first period the match became more physical: the Turkish wrestler slapped his opponent in the face several times, which caused frustration for Hlinchuk.
The Belarusian lost his composure and responded — but in a much rougher manner. After being struck, Kayaalp demonstratively fell onto the mat and remained down for some time, signaling a violation to the referees.
The officials quickly intervened and made a strict decision: Pavel Hlinchuk was disqualified. As a result, Rıza Kayaalp advanced to his 14th European Championship final.
The Belarusian wrestler may also lose the opportunity to compete for a bronze medal due to possible disciplinary sanctions.
