Armenian sambo athletes defeated Azerbaijani opponents in two finals and became European champions

From April 21 to 23, the 2026 European Junior Sambo Championship is taking place in the Serbian city of Novi Sad. On the second day of competition, April 22, the Armenian national team won two gold medals in the “sport sambo” discipline among athletes under 20.
Alex Khachatryan (58 kg) and Mher Ohanyan (71 kg) became European youth champions. Notably, in both finals the Armenian athletes faced representatives of Azerbaijan.
58 kg: On his way to the final, Alex Khachatryan defeated athletes from Georgia and Belarus, and in the decisive bout overcame Azerbaijani athlete Eljan Alakbarov.
71 kg: On his way to the final, Mher Ohanyan defeated athletes from Moldova, Germany, and Russia, and in the final proved stronger than Azerbaijani athlete Mikail Amirov.
After two days of competition, the Armenian team has collected 2 gold, 6 silver, and 5 bronze medals. The tournament will conclude on April 23.
