On February 15, 2026, the Armenian National Weightlifting Championship concluded in Yerevan, featuring both men’s and women’s competitions. The tournament gathered nearly all of the country’s top athletes and was streamed live on YouTube for the first time, marking an important step in promoting the sport domestically.
Super Heavyweight Battle and European Championship Outlook
The highlight of the men’s competition was traditionally the +110 kg category. Reigning world champion Varazdat Lalayan claimed the national title, reaffirming his status as Armenia’s undisputed leader in the division. Silver went to Simon Martirosyan, who competed last season in the 110 kg category.
Martirosyan is expected to return to 110 kg for the 2026 European Championship, where his main domestic rival would be Garik Karapetyan, the reigning national champion in that division. In the +110 kg category, Martirosyan’s chances against Lalayan remain objectively limited due to the significant bodyweight difference. Nevertheless, even in the super heavyweight division, Simon remains a serious contender for a continental medal.

Strong Competition in Middle and Heavy Categories
Garik Karapetyan dominated the 110 kg division with a confident performance. 2025 World Championship participants Garnik Cholakyan (60 kg) and Gor Sahakyan (71 kg) once again confirmed their leadership on the national stage.
In the 88 kg category, Suren Grigoryan, who also competed at the World Championships, was defeated by the experienced Rafik Harutyunyan, who moved up from 81 kg and successfully established himself in the higher division.
The 65 kg results currently offer limited optimism in terms of international prospects. However, in the 79 kg and 94 kg categories—where Armenia had no representatives at the last World Championships—there are promising signs. Martin Poghosyan (79 kg) and Ara Aghanyan (94 kg) posted respectable totals that, with further progress, could translate into contention for high placements internationally.
Women’s Tournament Without Major Surprises
The women’s competition unfolded largely as expected, with established leaders confirming their dominance.
The major news came from 23-year-old Mary Tumasyan, who announced her retirement after winning silver in the +86 kg category. The title was claimed by the experienced Tatev Hakobyan.
The 2026 European Weightlifting Championships will take place in Batumi, Georgia, from April 19 to 26, while the World Championships are scheduled for Ningbo, China, from October 27 to November 8.
