Vardanyan: “I consider myself Belarusian” — forward explains national team choice

elarus national team forward Karen Vardanyan took part in a press conference ahead of the friendly match against Armenia.
The 22-year-old striker made his debut for the national team on March 26 in a match against Cyprus, coming on under head coach Viktor Goncharenko. Vardanyan had previously been linked with a possible appearance for Armenia due to his Armenian heritage on his father’s side.
However, at the press conference, the player clearly stated his position, explaining his decision to represent Belarus.
“This is my first time in Armenia. I really liked it here, Yerevan is a nice city.
I understand that the fans’ reaction tomorrow may be mixed, but I was born in Belarus. Of course, I respect Armenian traditions, but I consider myself Belarusian,” Vardanyan said.
The friendly match between Belarus and Armenia will take place on March 29 and will be special for the forward, as he will play in the historical homeland of his family.
