From February 16 to 21, Yerevan will host the Eurasian League International Basketball Tournament, bringing together seven teams from five countries. The competition will take place at the Sports Development Center (former “Mika” complex), and admission for fans will be free.
Tournament details were presented at a press conference by Karen Giloyan, President of Urartu Basketball Club and the Eurasian League, and Arsen Makvetsyan, Head of the Yerevan Municipality Department of Sports and Youth Affairs.
According to Giloyan, organizing the tournament is a step toward establishing a fully professional basketball league in Armenia.
“Together with the Yerevan Municipality, we concluded that the country needs a professional basketball league. Teams will arrive in their strongest lineups: Georgia’s Orbi, Lebanon’s Hoops, the U.S.-based Pilot, Kazakhstan’s Barsy, as well as Armenian clubs Hatis, Urartu, and Erebuni. A total of seven teams will participate,” he said.
He emphasized that the tournament provides Armenian clubs with an important opportunity to gain international experience and test their competitiveness. If successful, participation in more prestigious competitions such as the Basketball Champions League or other European club tournaments could be considered in the future.
Makvetsyan noted that several international sporting events have been organized in the capital over the past three years, and now the Eurasian League tournament will become a major event for adult teams.
He also stated that the municipality, together with the federation, aims to increase basketball participation, including launching educational programs in kindergartens. Team sports, including basketball, are a priority for the city administration.
The tournament’s prize fund this year amounts to 6 million drams. Organizers подчеркнули, что competition will be held regularly and become an annual platform for international basketball cooperation.
