In Yerevan, one of the streets adjacent to Hrazdan Stadium has been renamed in honor of legendary footballer and coach Nikita Simonyan. This was reported by the press service of the city hall.
The relevant decision was adopted by the Council of Elders of Yerevan. According to the document, the new name has been given to a street located next to the main sports facility of the Armenian capital.
As noted in the justification of the decision, the initiative aims to perpetuate the name of Simonyan — one of the most prominent figures in Soviet and Armenian football. He is considered one of the key personalities in the country’s sports history.
Nikita Simonyan is the 1956 Olympic champion as part of the USSR national team, a multiple USSR champion and USSR Cup winner, and one of the top scorers in Soviet football history. After finishing his playing career, he worked as a coach and held senior positions in football organizations. In 1973, he led Yerevan’s Ararat to the championship as head coach.
The mayor’s office emphasized that renaming the street near the stadium is symbolic and reflects Simonyan’s contribution to the development of football.
The document was signed by Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan and will enter into force the day after the official publication of the decision, that is, from March 13, 2026.
