The first set of medals on the second competition day of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games was decided in the women’s downhill, and the race delivered two completely contrasting storylines.
The true heroine of the day was 30-year-old American Breezy Johnson. She posted the fastest time on the course and secured the first gold medal for Team USA at the Milan–Cortina Games.
However, the celebration for the American team was overshadowed by a dramatic incident. Forty-one-year-old alpine skiing legend Lindsey Vonn, considered one of the favorites, suffered a heavy crash during her run. The athlete sustained an injury and was airlifted to hospital by helicopter.

In addition to Vonn, Andorran skier Cande Moreno was also injured and, like the American, was transported to hospital by air.
For the host nation, the Olympics are unfolding successfully: Sofia Goggia’s bronze medal became Italy’s fourth medal after six medal events.
Yesterday, Switzerland claimed gold in the men’s downhill.
