Szmodics lost consciousness in a 2026 World Cup qualification playoff match

Ireland national team midfielder Sammie Szmodics was at the center of a worrying incident during the European qualification playoff match for the 2026 World Cup against the Czech Republic.
The footballer entered the field during extra time — in the 115th minute of the match. However, just two minutes later, in the 117th minute, he received a blow to the side and head during a game episode. The contact appeared minor and was not ruled a foul, but shortly after the collision, Szmodics suddenly lost consciousness and collapsed onto the pitch.

The medical team quickly rushed onto the field and provided first aid to the player for approximately five minutes. Eventually, the midfielder was carried off on a stretcher and was connected to a breathing apparatus.
It was later reported that Szmodics regained consciousness, but the exact causes of the incident and his current condition remain unknown.
The match between the Czech Republic and Ireland ended in a 2–2 draw, after which the teams proceeded to a penalty shootout.
UPDATED:
Sammie Szmodics was transferred to hospital yesterday having sustained a head injury during extra-time of the play-off against Czechia. Following further tests and a period of observation, he has been safely discharged from hospital - and will continue his recovery under the care of the Republic of Ireland & Derby County medical teams.
