Roman Avakian, a player of Armenia’s youth national team and Germany’s Mainz, has been called up to the Mexico U16 national team. He will take part in an international friendly tournament in France from March 31 to April 4. During the competition, Mexico will face their peers from Portugal, Japan, and Peru.
Avakian has previously represented Armenia at youth level. In 2024, he played for the U14 team at the UEFA Development Tournament, and in 2025 he participated in a U15 tournament in Yerevan. The midfielder scored against Uzbekistan and also converted a penalty in the shootout against Georgia.
Avakian is eligible to represent multiple national teams. By происхождение, he can play for Armenia, Mexico, and the United States: his father is Armenian and his mother is Mexican. Despite currently playing for Armenia’s youth teams, his final senior international decision remains open. His progress is being closely monitored in both Mexico and the United States.
It is worth noting that a call-up to Mexico’s youth team does not represent a final commitment. At youth level, players are allowed to switch national teams multiple times before making a final decision at senior level.
