Five Armenian wrestlers start today at the U23 European Wrestling Championships

On the opening day of the 2026 U23 European Championships in freestyle wrestling, five Armenian wrestlers will step onto the mat: Arman Harutyunyan, Arman Musikyan, David Margaryan, Hayk Papikyan and Gurgen Simonyan.
Two Armenian wrestlers will face very tough opponents from Russia right at the start of the tournament.
57 kg — Arman Harutyunyan
First opponent in the round of 16: Ayandar Ondar (Russia)
For the 18-year-old Arman, this will be his first tournament at the U23 level. Previously he won medals at the U17 World and European Championships and once competed at the U20 World Championships.
65 kg — Arman Musikyan
First opponent in the round of 16: Zoltan Mate Mijei (Hungary)
Musikyan will also compete for the Armenian U23 national team for the first time. Earlier he won a bronze medal at the U20 World Championships.
70 kg — David Margaryan
First opponent in the round of 16: Magomed Eltemirov (Russia)
David has already competed at the U23 level once and finished 5th at the 2025 U23 World Championships.
79 kg — Hayk Papikyan
First opponent in the round of 16: Tristan Aleksandrov (Estonia)
Hayk is the most experienced wrestler on this list. Papikyan represented Armenia’s senior national team at two European Championships. He has been competing at the U23 level since 2023, where he became a European silver medalist and is also a U20 European champion.
97 kg — Gurgen Simonyan
First opponent in the round of 16: Aimar Alzon Eginoa (Spain)
Simonyan will compete for the U23 national team for the first time but previously represented Armenia’s senior team at the 2025 European Championships.
