Portugal’s U-17 national team have been crowned world champions for the first time in history, lifting the FIFA U-17 World Cup™ trophy. In the decisive final held at Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Binu’s squad defeated Austria 1–0, completing a historic “golden double” after their earlier triumph at the European Championship.
Cabral — Hero of the Final
The only goal of the match came in the 32nd minute, scored by Anísio Cabral, who finished off a brilliantly orchestrated team move. It was his seventh goal of the tournament — second only to Austria’s Johannes Moser, who claimed the Golden Boot.
Austria, appearing in the final of a world tournament for the first time at any age level, posed several threats, including a dramatic moment in the 85th minute when Daniel Frauscher struck the post — inches away from a potential equalizer.
Portugal’s Road to Glory: Dominance and Drama
Portugal opened the tournament with authority, crushing New Caledonia 6–1 and African champions Morocco 6–0. Having already secured a place in the knockout rounds, they fell 1–2 to Japan — a loss that did nothing to derail their broader ambitions.
In the knockouts, the European champions displayed maturity and composure:
-
2–1 vs Belgium (Round of 32) — Cabral’s decisive brace.
-
5–0 vs Mexico (Round of 16) — five different scorers, including Cabral and Miguel Figueiredo.
-
2–0 vs Switzerland (Quarterfinals) — a brilliant strike from José Neto and solid defensive work.
-
0–0 vs Brazil, 6–5 on penalties (Semifinals) — Brazil’s Ângelo missed the decisive shot, sending Portugal into the final.
Austria’s Historic Breakthrough and Their Rising Star
Austria became the revelation of the tournament, showing discipline, structure and fighting spirit. Their standout player, Johannes Moser, recorded eight goals, unmatched consistency, and earned the Silver Ball for his contribution.
