From England to Armenia: DR Congo national team delay scandal reaches FIFA

From England to Armenia: DR Congo national team delay scandal reaches FIFA

English club West Ham intends to file an official complaint with FIFA and demand compensation after defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka missed the FA Cup quarterfinal match against Leeds.

The reason for the player’s absence was his forced delay in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The country’s football federation decided to keep national team players in camp until Monday due to state celebrations marking qualification for the 2026 World Cup. This violated FIFA regulations, which require players to return to their clubs no later than 48 hours after the international break—by April 2 in this case.

Wan-Bissaka reportedly found himself in a difficult situation: he did not make the decision to stay, but ultimately missed an important match and may face tension in his relationship with the club.

West Ham are unhappy about losing a key player while continuing to pay his salary without being able to use him on the pitch. The club expects financial compensation and awaits FIFA’s response.

The DR Congo football federation could now face sanctions, including fines and restrictions on calling up players in future international windows.

The situation has already affected other clubs. Spartak Moscow is considering fining midfielder Theo Bongonda for a similar delay. Additionally, Noah goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu has also not yet returned to his club after participating in celebrations.

The conflict between clubs and national teams is once again coming to the forefront, highlighting the importance of adhering to FIFA regulations.

It is worth noting that DR Congo defeated Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff final and qualified for the World Cup for the second time in its history.

Armenian club Noah’s goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu was on the bench for that match but played a crucial role in the African playoff final, saving two penalties against Nigeria.
