NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has confirmed that the league, together with FIBA, continues to work on the creation of a new professional basketball league in Europe. The project is expected to potentially launch in 2027.
The NBA is not abandoning its plans to enter the European market. Commissioner Adam Silver stated that the NBA, in cooperation with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), continues to advance the idea of launching a new European league that would be a separate competition featuring leading clubs from across the continent.
NBA Europe: Launch Timeline and League Format
According to preliminary information, the new tournament could begin in October 2027. One of the formats being discussed is a 16-team league, in which 12 clubs would receive permanent licenses, while four additional teams would qualify through preliminary tournaments.
The final launch date and the list of participating clubs have not yet been approved.
Countries That Could Host the NBA League
Among the countries being considered for participation in the NBA–FIBA project are:
- United Kingdom (London, Manchester)
- France (Paris, Lyon)
- Spain (Madrid, Barcelona)
- Italy (Rome, Milan)
- Germany (Berlin, Munich)
- Greece (Athens)
- Turkey (Istanbul)
Silver noted that Germany represents an important market for basketball development, given its recent victories at the World Championship and EuroBasket.
European Stars and Players’ Position
The growing interest of the NBA in Europe is largely linked to the influence of European players on global basketball. Among the league’s key stars are Nikola Jokić, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Dončić, and Victor Wembanyama.
The NBA commissioner emphasized that the league is consulting with players and seeks to preserve the traditions of European basketball while integrating them with the NBA’s commercial and sporting model.
Finances and Infrastructure
According to Silver, participation in the new league will require significant investment. Clubs will need to pay a high entry fee and invest in the construction and modernization of arenas. At the same time, quick returns on investment should not be expected.
“This is a long-term investment, not a project aimed at quick profits,” the commissioner noted.
NBA Expansion Plans
At the same time, the NBA is considering the possibility of expanding the league beyond its current 30 teams. Las Vegas and Seattle remain the main candidates. A final decision on this matter is expected by the end of 2026.
