Armenia national team striker Grant-Leon Ranos is increasingly appearing in the spotlight of German football media — unfortunately, not in a particularly positive context. The reputable outlet Rheinische Post has published a detailed analysis of the Armenian forward’s current situation at Borussia Mönchengladbach, which can be summed up in one phrase: Ranos has collided with the harsh reality of the Bundesliga.
A “Favorite Joker” With No Future?
At first glance, the situation looks paradoxical. In recent matchdays, Ranos has regularly come off the bench — against Mainz, Wolfsburg, and Borussia Dortmund. In the match against Dortmund, he even entered the pitch earlier than other substitutes. However, as German journalists emphasize, these appearances do not indicate trust or a clear long-term perspective.
Gladbach head coach Eugen Polanski has made it clear that Ranos’ development does not meet expectations. A particularly telling moment came late in the match against Dortmund. With the score at 0–1, Ranos received the ball just outside the opponent’s penalty area but hesitated for too long, allowing a BVB defender to dispossess him with ease.
“If we demand playing time, situations like this are unacceptable. Grant understands that himself,” Polanski commented bluntly.
What Is Ranos’ Problem According to the Germans?
German analysts largely agree: Ranos has several solid qualities but lacks any truly outstanding one. The main weaknesses regularly highlighted are:
• Too soft in physical duels
• Slow decision-making
• Loses out to competitors in dynamism and confidence
• Poor sense of timing in decisive moments
As a comparison, the coach cited the example of 16-year-old Wael Mohya, who came on for just one minute — and immediately created a dangerous chance with a shot. “I like how free he plays,” Polanski noted. According to the coaching staff, this freedom is exactly what Ranos has been missing for two and a half years.
Statistics Exist, Progress Does Not
Formally, Ranos has improved: he scored his first Bundesliga goal and has received more minutes than before. However, a deeper analysis is worrying.
In the Regionalliga with Gladbach’s second team, Ranos continues to post strong numbers:
8 goals and 10 assists in 1,320 minutes — an impressive record. But the issue is that he produced virtually identical statistics several years ago with Bayern II.
German journalists draw an uncomfortable conclusion: over the past few years, the 22-year-old striker has barely progressed in his development.
Competition and a Dead End
The situation is further complicated by fierce competition. For Ranos to even make the Bundesliga squad, essentially five attacking players would need to be unavailable at the same time. Young talents are overtaking him: Mohya, Fritz Fleck, and other promising players are already breathing down his neck.
A loan move to Kaiserslautern in the second half of the 2024/25 season yielded no results, and in the summer of 2025 Gladbach failed to find a club willing to bet on the Armenian forward.
What Future Awaits Ranos?
The conclusion of Rheinische Post is harsh but honest:
• Ranos is not strong enough for top-level Bundesliga football
• He is too good for the fourth division
• His first chance in the 2. Bundesliga has already been missed
At Borussia itself, he is unlikely to find his footballing future. January could be decisive, when the club must choose between another loan, a permanent transfer, or a complete separation.
For the Armenia national team, this situation is a worrying signal. Ranos remains one of the most talented strikers of his generation, but without stable club status and confidence at senior level, realizing his potential will become increasingly difficult.
In Germany, he is no longer spoken of as a “talent for the future.” He is now a player from whom concrete actions are expected here and now — and time is running out for Grant-Leon Ranos.
This season, Grant-Leon Ranos has played 8 Bundesliga matches, scoring 1 goal. He has also featured in 4 Regionalliga games, scoring 2 goals and providing 4 assists.
Additionally, Ranos scored the winning goal against Ireland for the Armenia national team.
