Mainz U16 midfielder Roman Avakian Gomez could receive a call-up to Mexico’s U17 national team in March to participate in a friendly tournament. This is reported by American media outlets, which also expect him to receive an invitation from the United States.
Roman previously represented Armenia at youth level. He played for the U14 team at the 2024 UEFA Development Tournament and in 2025 took part in the U15 tournament in Yerevan. During that competition, Avakyan scored against Uzbekistan and converted a penalty in the shootout against Georgia.
A potential call-up to Mexico does not necessarily mean the player will accept it. At youth level, national team eligibility remains open, and the final decision is usually made later.
Avakian continues to develop within the 1. FSV Mainz 05 system and is considered one of the standout players of his age group. Interest from three countries — Armenia, Mexico, and the United States — confirms that his progress is being closely monitored internationally.
In any case, the very fact of a possible call-up highlights the growing status of the young midfielder.
By origin, Avakian Gomez is eligible to represent Armenia, Mexico, and the United States. Although he currently plays for Armenia at youth level, his senior international choice remains open — and both Mexico and the U.S. are closely following his development.
His father is Armenian and his mother is Mexican. He is also eligible for the United States by birth, as he was born in San Diego.
