Finalissima between Spain and Argentina officially cancelled

The Finalissima match between the national teams of Spain and Argentina, which was supposed to determine the strongest team between the champions of Europe and South America, has been officially cancelled. The decision was made by UEFA and CONMEBOL after lengthy negotiations with the tournament organizers.

Originally, the match was scheduled for March 27, 2026, and was to take place at Lusail Stadium in Doha, Qatar. However, holding the game became impossible due to the political situation in the Middle East, which made organizing such a major international event problematic.

In an official statement, UEFA noted that the organization tried to preserve the match and considered several alternative options. Despite these efforts, the parties were unable to reach an agreement.

“Showing strong determination to save this important match despite the difficulties of relocating such a significant game within an extremely tight timeframe, UEFA considered various alternatives. However, each of them ultimately proved unacceptable for the Argentine Football Association,” the statement said.

Proposed alternatives

UEFA suggested several scenarios in order for the match to take place:

• Hold the game in Madrid at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on March 27 with an equal distribution of fans — Argentina refused.

• Organize a two-leg confrontation: the first match in Madrid and the second in Buenos Aires before Euro 2028 and the 2028 Copa América — the proposal was rejected.

• Find a neutral venue in Europe and play on March 27 or March 30 — this option was also declined.

For its part, the Argentine federation proposed holding the match after the World Cup, but Spain had no available dates. Later the Argentine side said it was ready to play only on March 31, but that date was unsuitable for organizing the match.

What is the Finalissima

Finalissima is a tournament held within the cooperation framework between UEFA and CONMEBOL. It features the winner of the European Championship and the Copa América champion to determine the strongest national team between the two continents.

The first modern Finalissima took place in 2022, when Argentina defeated Italy 3–0 at Wembley Stadium in London.

Now the second edition of the tournament, in which Euro 2024 champion Spain and Copa América 2024 winner Argentina were supposed to play, will not take place.

UEFA thanked the organizers in Qatar, the country’s authorities, and football organizations for their efforts to preserve the match and expressed hope for a quick stabilization of the situation in the region.
