FIFA Launches New International U-15 Tournament: Festival Format to Begin in 2026

The FIFA Council has officially confirmed the launch of a new international tournament for under-15 national teams, to be held in a festival format. The initiative is part of FIFA’s long-term strategy to develop grassroots and youth football and will be open to all 211 member associations.

New Format and Global Reach

The first FIFA U-15 Festival will take place in 2026 and will feature boys’ U-15 national teams. In 2027, the focus will shift to girls’ U-15 teams. From 2028 onwards, FIFA plans to organize two separate festivals each year — one for boys and one for girls — ensuring participation opportunities for all associations.

The key feature of the new competition is its developmental rather than purely competitive nature. Matches will be played under adapted conditions:

• Shortened playing time

• Reduced pitch dimensions

• Teams of 7 to 9 players

This approach is designed to better suit the physical and developmental needs of U-15 players while creating a more educational and supportive environment for young talents.

Focus on Youth Development

FIFA President Gianni Infantino highlighted the importance of the new tournament for the future of world football:

“In recent years, FIFA has significantly strengthened its work in youth football development, and the results are clear. We are heavily investing in youth competitions, and the launch of the FIFA U-15 festivals is a natural, logical and very exciting next step.”

He also emphasized that these tournaments are a core part of FIFA’s mission to provide equal opportunities for talented players worldwide, regardless of their country.

The new format opens additional opportunities for national associations, particularly those from developing football nations. Participation in international U-15 festivals will give young players invaluable experience and allow coaches to apply modern training methodologies at an early stage.
