The FIFA Council, which met in Doha ahead of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final, made several key decisions related to both football development and the financial framework of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The main outcome of the meeting was the approval of an unprecedented prize money distribution for the participants of the upcoming tournament.
The total amount to be distributed among national associations will reach USD 727 million — a 50% increase compared to the prize money allocated after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Of this sum, USD 655 million will be dedicated to prize payments for the 48 national teams taking part in the tournament.
The winner of the 2026 World Cup will receive USD 50 million, the runner-up USD 33 million, the third-place team USD 29 million, and the fourth-place team USD 27 million.
