Celtic striker Johnny Kenny has received his first call-up to the Republic of Ireland national team. The 22-year-old forward replaced injured Troy Parrott of AZ Alkmaar and will help the team in the World Cup qualifying matches against Hungary (September 6, Dublin) and Armenia (September 9, Yerevan).
Parrott, who scored 10 goals in 7 matches for AZ this season, was injured during a club training session and will miss the September camp.
Kenny, who is 177 cm tall, previously played for Ireland’s youth national team. Over two seasons with Celtic, he has played 13 matches and scored 2 goals, having earlier represented Shamrock Rovers. In August, the striker extended his contract with the club, although he was left out of the squad in the recent derby against Rangers.
Head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson noted that the rest of the players joined the national team without issues.
