Twenty-year-old American Alysa Liu delivered a stunning comeback at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan–Cortina d’Ampezzo. After the short program, Liu was third, but she overtook two Japanese skaters in the free skate and captured gold with a total of 226.79 points.
This marks Liu’s second Olympic gold medal — her first came in the team event. Her road to the top has been truly dramatic: from competing at Beijing 2022 to retiring, returning last season, winning the 2025 World title in Boston, and now claiming individual Olympic glory.
Liu became the first American women’s singles Olympic medalist in 20 years — since Sasha Cohen — and the first champion since 2002, when Sarah Hughes won gold.

Petrosyan Finishes Sixth After Eventful Free Skate
Adelia Petrosyan was fifth after the short program but dropped to sixth overall.
Her free skate was tense and full of key moments. She fell on a quadruple toe loop attempt — her first quad of the night — later ruled under-rotated by the technical panel.
Her triple Lutz–triple toe loop combination was reviewed.
She landed strong triple Salchow and triple loop jumps to recover confidently.
In the triple Lutz–double Axel sequence, the second Axel was initially called out of sequence but later validated after review.
The triple flip–double toe loop also drew attention from judges.
Her spin and step sequence were upgraded from Level 3 to Level 4 after review.
Despite some upgrades, technical reductions affected her final score.
Rafael Arutyunyan’s student Sofya Samodelkina placed 10th with a competitive performance on Olympic ice.
