Goal — Fifth Gold: Malkhas Amoyan Aims for New Triumph at the European Championship
Bronze medalist of the Paris Olympic Games, two-time world champion, and four-time European champion Malkhas Amoyan is targeting another major success. From April 20 to 26, the European Wrestling Championship will take place in the capital of Albania — Tirana, where the Armenian athlete will attempt to win his fifth continental gold.
The 27-year-old wrestler will compete in the 77 kg weight category as the reigning champion. However, Amoyan admits that maintaining leadership is harder than achieving it.
Speaking with journalists, the athlete noted that the status of favorite automatically makes him the main target for opponents.
“When you enter a tournament as a leader, everyone prepares against you differently. Opponents come highly motivated and better prepared. That’s why every bout becomes even more difficult,” he emphasized.
According to Amoyan, several wrestlers in his weight category are contenders for gold, and the outcome will depend on form and psychological readiness on a given day.
Despite the tough competition, the athlete is determined and ready to do everything possible to once again reach the top of the podium and bring another gold medal to the Armenia national team.
It should be noted that the Armenian Greco-Roman wrestling team will compete with a full squad. Representing the country in Tirana:
- Manvel Khachatryan (55 kg)
- Suren Aghajanyan (60 kg)
- Karen Aslanyan (63 kg)
- Slavik Galstyan (67 kg)
- Gaspar Terteryan (72 kg)
- Malkhas Amoyan (77 kg)
- Samvel Grigoryan (82 kg)
- Gevorg Tadevosyan (87 kg)
- Hayk Khloyan (97 kg)
- Albert Vardanyan (130 kg)
The upcoming European Championship will be an important stage of preparation for future international competitions and an opportunity for the Armenian team to confirm its position among the strongest teams on the continent.
