A warm welcome ceremony was held in Yerevan for Armenia’s Greco-Roman wrestling team, which returned from the U23 European Championship held in Zrenjanin, Serbia.
The Armenian team delivered an impressive performance, winning 2 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medal, which secured them second place in the team standings.
European champion in the 60 kg category, Suren Aghajanyan, said that his toughest bout was the quarterfinal against a Polish wrestler:
“I lost many points in the first period, but my physical conditioning helped me turn the match around and secure the victory.”
In the final, Aghajanyan faced a Georgian opponent. According to him, the rival used a trick — applying oil to his body to neutralize his signature move. However, the Armenian wrestler was prepared:
“I had a backup plan, and it worked,” he noted.
The bout ended with a confident early victory for Aghajanyan with a score of 9:0.
Another gold medalist, Aramais Harutyunyan (130 kg), emphasized that the final was the most difficult:
“In the final, I wrestled a Hungarian athlete — a youth world and European champion. It was a very tough match.”
The Armenian Wrestling Federation published a video showing the moment the athletes were welcomed at Zvartnots Airport. Fans, relatives, and representatives of the sports community warmly greeted the team, highlighting their success and contribution to Armenian sports.
Armenian wrestlers had their best-ever U23 European Championship, winning 3 gold medals.
