Could Argentina Miss the World Cup? Messi Would Clearly Hate That

Could Argentina Miss the World Cup? Messi Would Clearly Hate That
Football 💬 Comment

Ten days ago, Argentinians learned their group opponents for the World Cup. Algeria, Austria, Jordan — a very manageable draw for the reigning champions. Messi was already preparing for his farewell dance, fans were planning routes to the U.S. Then La Nación dropped a story that made everyone in Buenos Aires who understands football politics tense up.

Claudio Tapia, the president of the Argentine Football Association, is suspected of corruption. Alongside his closest associates — trusted aide Pablo Toviggino and deputy treasurer Luciano Nakis. The story is painfully familiar: officials who once couldn’t afford a decent car suddenly accumulate luxury assets. Tapia, who worked in a garbage collection company before his football career, allegedly owns a ten-hectare estate. With a helipad. Stables. A collection of fifty vintage cars. Officially registered to a pensioner and a private entrepreneur — the classic use of front men.

At the same time, investigators are digging into Sur Finanzas, a financial company that sponsored the national team and numerous clubs. Its owner, Ariel Vallejo, is a close friend of Tapia. Allegations include embezzlement, tax evasion, and money laundering through TV and marketing rights. Raids were conducted at eighteen clubs and the federation’s headquarters. The ARCA agency, which reports directly to President Milei, is demanding criminal charges. The sum involved is around seven million dollars.

And this is where it gets interesting. FIFA has zero tolerance for government interference in national football associations. It’s written in bold in the statutes. If Argentine courts find Tapia guilty and remove him by state decision, Infantino could claim a violation of AFA’s independence. Sanctions? Technically, anything is possible — even expulsion from the World Cup.

But reality says otherwise. No one is going to kick out the reigning world champions from their own tournament. This is a cash-cow team. This is Messi. This is billion-dollar broadcasting deals and packed stadiums.

In theory, FIFA could make noise, wag its finger, and demand a quick change in federation leadership. In practice, it will accept whatever decision the Argentine authorities make and carry on as if nothing happened. Because business matters more than statutes. Because national teams are never suspended from major tournaments over internal federation corruption — there are simply no precedents. Corrupt schemes by officials? A cost of doing business, conveniently ignored when global superstars are involved.

So keep an eye on the situation, but feel free to book your June tickets. Messi will not miss his final World Cup. Even if Tapia and his friends are forced to vacate their offices in a hurry.
